| BIOGRAPHY FOR POBBLES THE POBBLEBONK FROG | |
The QLD Frog Society has acquired a great new mascot in the form of "Pobbles" the Pobblebonk Frog, thanks to the generous State Government grant.
On a recent visit to Outer North Brisbane, Pobbles was kind enough to catch up with Susan to give QFS members an insight into the REAL Pobbles.
Name: Pobbles the Pobblebonk Frog. I know, it's a bit of a funny name but it's better than "Kermit". I have 42 friends who are all named "Kermit".
My scientific name is Limnodynastes terraereginae which means "Queensland Marsh King"!
Gender: Male
Age: Guess!
Hobbies: Chasing insects, keeping my cool and playing "hopscotch" with my friends. I also like burrowing into the ground at times and dancing in the rain!
Likes: Undeveloped areas, clean creeks and ponds, people that give me my space and people who support the QLD Frog Society.
Dislikes: Bulldozers, people who try to ruin my habitat, people who mistake me for a toad and people who litter! (When I say "Toad" I don't mean that I dislike my home state of QLD. I Love QLD. Go Queenslander!")
Favourite colour: Brown. No, Maroon. Umm.. it's a tie! Maroon and brown!
Favourite Food: Small invertebrates and insects.
What is the best part about being the QLD Frog Societys' mascot? It's an honour to do it. Frogs rarely get a chance to stand up and speak about the issues affecting us. I have a bit of a frog in my throat at times so the QFS speaks on behalf of myself and all frogs to try and ensure we get a fair go. I also enjoy meeting so many wonderful people who come along and support us at the different festivals and events we attend. I think people are surprised at times to learn I am not a Canetoad but a Pobblebonk Frog. It's fun to show people that not all frogs are green like Kermit.
What's one thing about the QFS that you think people should know?
The Qld Frog Society does its best to foster an awareness of frogs in the community and educates people about our habitat and the issues that affect our frogs. They even hold working bees to help clean up our habitat! You see, a clean environment is really important to us frogs because we take in water through a process known as Osmosis.
Can you explain to some of our readers what Osmosis is, Pobbles?
I sure can, Susan. Osmosis means we take in water by absorbing it through our skin. We are very different to human beings in that regard. Imagine if you had to drink the water in drains, ponds, puddles and creeks. Could you be confident in doing that without getting sick? It's not always easy to find clean water as so many areas where we used to live have been cleared away. It's sad though that some species of frogs have already disappeared entirely. We certainly don't want that to happen to all the great frogs out there. Especially not us Pobblebonks!
Luckily though, thanks to the QFS and the people that support it, I believe that things are changing and that, if we are dilligent, things can only get better.
Thanks for your time, Pobbles. I appreciate you are very busy. Is there anything you'd like to add?
Yeah! I will be at some upcoming QFS events and would love for people to come and say "G'day". There's always someone friendly from the QFS on hand to answer your questions and you might like to consider joining the society. You get a quarterly Frogsheet that tells you all about the recent frog news in QLD with updates from QFS and of course, you can buy merchandise via the website.
I'll also be updating my area on the website aswell as posting updates in the Frogsheet so you'll always be in the loop as to the goings on in Pobbles' World.
The QFS is a great cause and it means that more frogs like me have a fighting chance to survive well into the future!
Thanks again, Pobbles.
No worries. I'm off...like a frog in a sock! Just Kidding... Stay tuned for the next "ribbeting" update from me when we will discuss the mysterious chytrid fungus!!!
