Think cane toads are the problem? Think again.
Our latest campaign seeks to bring to light five processes which are much more threatening to frogs than the cane toad. Cane toads are often the focus of events and activities by community groups which seek to improve the outcomes for frog populations generally, and whilst there is nothing wrong with this, often many other more threatening processes are overlooked and the community is not well informed about these – and what they can do in their own backyards or area of influence.
The top five threatening processes, as determined by ecologists who specialise in Queensland’s frog fauna, are provided in order of most threatening, below:
- Habitat loss;
- Amphibian chytrid fungus;
- Pest fish, feral pigs and weeds;
- Contaminated runoff/altered hydrology; and
- Climate change.
